Hardcore isn't hardcore in the sense... The game is a 'hardcore' survival with souls-like combat.
Hardcore isn't hardcore in the sense of permadeath or anything, but when you 'die', you are knocked out and a dice is rolled to see whether you wake up back home, or you wake up in a bandit camp and have to break out, with both making your worn gear takes a hit to durability (iirc).
Survival being about food, water, and temperature.
Combat being the whole block, dodge, wait for openings to attack or be greedy.
This isn't Skyrim with a large inventory, meaning all your inventory comes down to pocket and backpack space; heavier backpacks give more space, but make you less mobile during combat, while lighter is vice-versa.
But backpacks can be dropped on the ground by a button press, freeing up your mobility.
There are melee weapons, ranged weapons, traps, and magic from what I've seen in my 23hrs of playtime, so you have various ways of playing.
You can camp outside the city once you have a sleeping bag/tent, and even cook dinner (or warm up) after making a campfire, or even make tea or boil dirty water to clean it once you have a pot atop the fire.
And many other things that I'm surely missing.
My biggest gripe and the reason why I quit, is directly related to the game's vision - the limited inventory space and making sure you take only what you need: this killed my drive to complete it, due to after the 100th time of running all the way back to the city to drop off or sell something, freeing up inventory space; I get the idea for the game and I like that the devs keep to their vision, but when I spend tens of minutes just crossing a map for some gear to sell, just to do it again a hundred times, the repetitiveness becomes grinding against my patience.
Especially when you return to pick up stuff you missed the first time, just for your inventory to be maxed again, which leads to slogging across the map like you did moments ago.
I can't do it anymore knowing most of my time is spent meandering instead of actively playing the game - I like making progress instead of chipping away.
They could have went the Dragon's Dogma approach, with fast travel tied to expensive equipment (Ferrystones), instead of relying completely on hiking; could even give a horse that you have to maintain as well, increasing difficulty for the price of expanded inventory, movement speed, etc.
With the review out of the way, that doesn't mean you won't like it, and for $4.50, it's worth checking out.
